John Souza scored the tying goal and was “… chosen for the trip to Rio” for the U.S. national team’s entry in the 1950 World Cup. Goals: Bob Craddock, Frank Wallace, Pete Matevich; Joe Gaetjens, Joe Maca, John Souza.
An “East-West” game was announced for St. Louis on April 12, Souza to be joined by Joe Rego and Ed Souza of Fall River on the East team. Also named were Joe Maca, Gene Olaf and Ben Watman (Brooklyn Hispano); Lloyd Monsen (New York Americans); John O’Connell (New York Americans); Carl Erikson, Joe Gaetjens, Alfonso Marino (Bronx); Arty Sheppell (Kearney); and Walter Bahr, Ed McIllveney and Bennie McLaughlin (Philadelphia), according to The Boston Globe.
