April 28, 1990 – Boston Bolts 1:2 Ft. Lauderdale Strikers at Nickerson Field (Att.: 6,648)

The Boston Bolts had only three returning players from the 1989 ASL title game for their home-opener, which attracted a record crowd, according to Joe Burris’ story in The Boston Globe. The Strikers took a two-goal lead before Koziol scored off a Janusz Michallik-Ian Hennessy combination.

Goals: Koziol; Alvin James, Eric Eichmann.

April 28, 1935 – St. Louis Central Breweries 5:2 Pawtucket Rangers, National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) final first leg at Walsh Memorial Stadium

April 28, 1917 – New Bedford Celtics 2:1 Fore River

Goals: McDavitt, Croasdale; Andy Stradan.

The Fore River lineup also included center half Davey Page, who might have been among the first players to make a gymnastic goal commemoration. Fore River took a 3-0 win over the Fall River Rovers “before one of the largest crowds ever seen at a soccer game in this city” at the Fore River Shipyard field in Quincy April 27, 1918. “The final goal resulted from “one of the finest pieces of playing … young Paige (sic) of Fore River got in a running kick that sent the ball clean into the cage while he, unable to check his momentum, made a pretty handspring after kicking the ball.” (The Boston Globe)

Page’s name is usually spelled without the “i” in game stories and lineups. Still searching for more information on him; would have been nice to have a video of the handspring “celebration.”
