April 3, 1932 – New Bedford Whalers win National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup)

The New Bedford Whalers were led by Billy Gonsalves, Alex McNab, Bill McPherson and Werner “Scotty” Nilsen. Those four players had combined to win the 1930 and ’31 U.S. Open Cup when the team was based in Fall River, and would go on to win the U.S. Open Cup with Stix, Baer & Fuller in 1933 and 1934.
Gonsalves and McNab would win their sixth successive U.S. Open Cup title with St. Louis Central Breweries in 1935. Gonsalves captured two more U.S. Open Cups, with Brooklyn Hispano in 1943 and ’44. McPherson and Nilsen played on five successive cup-winners (1930, ’31, ’32, ’33, ’34), and McPherson also won two other titles – 1924 and ’27 with Fall River. The Whalers’ Tom Florie, captain of the 1930 U.S. World Cup team, also won the 1941 U.S. Open Cup with the Pawtucket Rangers, when he was 43 years old.
