The 1934 National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) final extended to a third game.
“The victory means a third game will be necessary to decide the championship and the cup committee were to meet tonight at the Hotel Biltmore, Providence, to name the place.” Goals: McIntyre, Bob McAuley (2); Nilsen, Gonsalves.
Note: In stories advancing the match, The Boston Globe wrote: “The field has never been used for a Sunday game before and breaking this hard and fast rule means many fans will be given the opportunity of seeing what promises to be the best tilt we have had in the National Cup series for a good many years. … Mayor John Quinn of Pawtucket will ‘kick off’ promptly at 3 p.m. and then big game will be on. Gates will be open at 12:30 so that out of town fans will not have to wait in line. Boston is sending down a large delegation and which will be divided in its support. Many are going to root for their old favorites, (Alex) McNab, (Werner) Nilsen and (Billy) Gonsalves, who are with Stix, Baer & Fuller. Hundreds more will cheer Bob McIntyre, ex-(Lusitania Recreation) star who has scored in every game he has played for the Rangers in this National Cup series.”
