Aug. 10, 1930 – Sao Paulo FC 5:3 U.S., Chácara da Floresta, Brazil

Post by

Friendly match duel between Sao Paulo’s Arthur Friedenreich and Fall River’s Billy Gonsalves, the U.S. visiting Brazil as part of a post-World Cup tour. Friedenreich would score more than 1,200 goals (officially listed at 1,329 goals), concluding his career with Flamengo in 1935. Gonsalves totaled an estimated 1,000 goals, retiring in 1952.

Friedenreich, 38, had not been named to the Brazil national team for the 1930 World Cup. Gonsalves was celebrating his 22nd birthday playing alongside James Brown (21), Arnie Oliver (23) and Bert Patenaude (20), a group of young players that might have formed the base of the U.S. national team for years to come.

Goals: Armandinho, Friedenreich 3, Romeu; Patenaude 2, Brown.
