Roma presented star players such as Aldo Bet, Franco Cordova, Elvio Salvori and Valerio Spadoni, and was coached by Helenio Herrera, who had guided Inter to the 1966 European Champions Cup title. Spadoni hit the crossbar in the opening minutes and missed on at least two unmarked attempts after Sandor Zambo (third minute) and Ferenc Bene (25th) scored. Bene totaled 36 goals in 76 international appearances, converting in all four of Hungary’s games in the 1966 World Cup. Ujpest Dozsa won the fourth of seven successive Hungarian titles in the 1971-72 season, then knocked Celtic out of the 1972-73 Champions Cup before being eliminated by Juventus.
Referee for the match was Frank Mirisola, who played for Boston SC, then worked several games involving visiting professional teams and went on to become supervisor of referees for City of Boston high schools. The teams went on to meet in Montreal and Hamilton, Ontario.
