Steve Ralston (41st minute) and Shalrie Joseph (102nd) scored as the Revolution avenged losses to the Dynamo in the 2006 and ’07 MLS Cup finals.
The Revolution were the only U.S. team to win the SuperLiga (2007-10) – they would also reach the 2010 finals (2-1 loss to Morelia). The Revolution had an 8W-2L-4D (1W-0L-1D away) record in three SuperLiga events – 12 games staged at Gillette Stadium.
Ralston scored off a Mauricio Castro cross, then sent a free kick to Joseph, who outdueled Bobby Boswell to head past Pat Onstad. Nate Jaqua (18th) and Kei Kamara (97th) converted for Houston. That was the first of Kamara’s 13 goals (10 for the Revolution) at Gillette Stadium, through Aug. 5, 2017.
In the 2006 MLS Cup final, the Dynamo had defeated the Revolution in a penalty kick shootout. This time, the Revolution took a 6-5 shootout victory as Matt Reis saved twice and Chris Albright, Chris Tierney, Jeff Larentowicz, Taylor Twellman, Shalrie Joseph and Steve Ralston converted before Houston’s Corey Ashe hit the bar.
SuperLiga success barely compensated for the team’s MLS Cup failures (five runnerup finishes from 2002-14), though. The Revolution have also reached three U.S. Open Cup finals, winning the 2007 tournament.
