A few months after playing for the U.S. in the 1930 World Cup, Billy Gonsalves and Bert Patenaude teamed up with Fall River against national team captain Tommy Florie of the New Bedford Whalers.

“Patenaude, usually an accurate kicker, threw away an easy opportunity in front of the goal with less than two minutes to play. Center halfback Jimmy Montgomerie made his ASL debut for the New Bedford Whalers. Montgomerie, who was awarded the Military Medal and Military Cross with bar serving in the Canadian Army in World War I, was born in Scotland and played for the Montreal Highlanders and Grenadier Guards. Montgomerie played most of his ASL career with the Whalers, totaling 303 games and 45 goals and was nicknamed “Iron Man Monty” after performing in 208 consecutive matches. Boston (18W-4L-7D, 43 points) leads ASL at halfway mark, clinching berth in post-season title game. Davids’ Stadium was located about two miles from the site of the New York Red Bulls’ stadium. Goal: Nilsen 16’.

Abbot Worsted AFC twice reached the National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) semifinals and won the 1921 and ’22 Massachusetts State Cup title. “We are not satisfied to play second fiddle to any team in this State.
