Jan. 14, 2005 – Revolution select Michael Parkhurst with No. 9 pick, James Riley in the second round (21st overall) and Tony Lochhead in third round (33rd overall) in MLS SuperDraft

Michael Parkhurst proved to be another exception to the rule about the U.S. development system. Parkhurst emerged as a central defender, emphasizing skill over size, on the way to a collegiate career at Wake Forest and U.S. national team residency in Bradenton, Fla.

This turned out to be Steve Nicol’s final MLS draft as Revolution coach, and Nicol showed he still could pick winners. In 1999, when Nicol arrived in the U.S. to be a player/coach with the Framingham-based Boston Bulldogs he might not have known the difference between the MLS draft and the Selective Service. Jan. 12, 2007 – Revolution select Wells Thompson No. 5, Amaechi Igwe No. 12 and Adam Cristman in the fourth round (48th overall) in MLS SuperDraft

Cristman looked to be carrying on a tradition of overachieving late-round Revolution picks, playing as a reserve in two of the biggest wins in team history, the 2007 U.S. Open Cup and 2008 Superliga finals. Thompson started and scored in the Open Cup final, a 3-2 victory over FC Dallas, and Igwe went the distance in central defense in a 2-2 tie and penalty kick win in the Superliga title match against the Houston Dynamo. The New England Revolution transformed themselves over a one-month span in 2002.

The Revolution collected 62 percent of Dempsey’s transfer fee, and put the money to use to start its academy. This deal also seemed fated to be the first of many moves involving Revolution players. Shalrie Joseph was being recruited by Celtic. Taylor Twellman would receive offers, the best a $3.5 million deal from Preston North End. Jan. 9, 2014 – Revolution acquire Charlie Davies from Randers on free transfer

Charlie Davies always wanted to play for his hometown team, but it took seven years and five transfers before his wish came true. Davies joined the Revolution on loan from Randers FC in August 2013, the move made permanent after the season.

Davies then helped spark a Revolution run to the 2014 MLS Cup final. Davies set a team post-season record with four goals in five games as the Revolution eliminated the Columbus Crew and New York Red Bulls on the way to the final, a 2-1 extra time loss to the LA Galaxy. Jan. 8, 1933 – Pawtucket Rangers 8×2 Victoria Mills. U.S. Open Cup match in Providence.

Walter Dick and Bob McIntyre convert hat tricks in a “National Cup round robin game.” McIntyre scored “three goals in succession in the first half and added another in the second, while Dick performed the same stunt by scoring three times,” according to Boston Globe 1/9/33 editions. The Rangers team would go on to the U.S. Open Cup final in 1934 (loss to Stix, Baer & Fuller) and ’35 (loss to Central Breweries). Three Rangers would play for the U.S. in the 1934 World Cup: Dick, Ed Czerkewicz and Tommy Florie, who captained the U.S. national team in the 1930 World Cup, performing alongside the Rangers’ Andy Auld. Jan. 7, 1922 – Philadelphia Field Club 3×1 J&P Coats. ASL match at Phillies Ball Park.

Tommy “Whitey” Fleming equalized with a first-half penalty kick and Dugald “Dougie” Campbell scored twice in the second half for the “Phillies,” the Bethlehem Steel team that was playing home games in Philadelphia’s baseball stadium in the 1921-22 ASL season. The Bethlehem Globe editions of 1/9/22: “Tripping gave Whitey Fleming a free chance in front of the net and he made good by driving the ball squarely between the uprights, over the head of Knowles.” Campbell, born in Paisley, Scotland, won three ASL titles (1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26) and two U.S. Open Cups (1924 and ’27) with the Fall River Marksmen. Jan. 6, 1923 – Bethlehem Steel 1×1 J&P Coats – duel between ASL’s top two scorers

Tommy “Whitey” Fleming (22 goals) scores for Coats, a Daniel McNiven (28 goals) penalty kick equalizing late in the opening half. According to the 1/7/23 editions of The Boston Globe: Fleming capitalized on a failed clearance and “drove the ball into the net with (Findlay) Kerr having no chance to save.” Fleming “one of the outstanding wingers of his day,” according to Colin Jose’s The American Soccer League: The Golden Years of American Soccer, was 17 years old when he arrived from Ayshire to play for the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy (clubhouse and playing field still standing, btw). Jan. 5, 2014 – Eusebio da Silva Ferreira dies in Lisbon

Eusebio da Silva Ferreira concluded his Benfica career and moved to the NASL to play for the Boston Minutemen in 1975, the year Pelé joined the New York Cosmos. The Eusebio-Pelé rivalry played out early in the season when the teams met at Nickerson Field June 20, 1975, the Minutemen winning, 2-1. Pelé left the game after his goal was ruled offside, the oversold crowd (estimated at 20,000-plus) storming the field, the result later annulled by NASL commissioner Phil Woosnam. Minutemen owner John Sterge was experiencing financial difficulties and facing Securities and Exchange Commission charges, so he sent Eusebio and Wolfgang Suhnholz to Toronto, where they won the 1976 Soccer Bowl title.
