Fore River FC earned an upset victory over the Boston Wonder Workers in the U.S. Open Cup, thanks to two Dundas goals and one by Gowdy. Unable to find a first name for Dundas, who often appears as a center forward in game stories and lineups. Bert Patenaude scores both Fall River goals past Kennaway. Scheduled opponent, Velez Sarsfield, delayed by “railway mishap in Texas … en route to the East.” Velez, a team that included players from Argentina’s 1930 World Cup team that defeated the U.S., 6-1, in the semifinals, arrived for a Feb. 22, 1931 match. Both goalkeepers — Joe Kennaway (Celtic FC) and Johnny Reder (first baseman for the Boston Red Sox) — would change teams in 1932. Jeremiah Best scored twice and Watson one goal for the All-Stars.

Dempsey, Noonan and Twellman had been in the starting lineup when the Revolution lost to the Los Angeles Galaxy, 1-0, in extra time in the 2005 MLS Cup. Soares became a New England Revolution starter in central defense, paired with Franco Coria, in the team’s season-opener, a 1-1 draw with the Los Angeles Galaxy at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on March 20, 2011. Soares, who totaled 101 appearances and five goals in all competitions with the Revolution, concluded his time with the team in the 2014 MLS Cup final, a 2-1 extra time loss to the Galaxy at the StubHub Center in Carson.
