Bert Patenaude led the way with five goals for the New York Giants. Patenaude, who completed the World Cup’s first hat trick in a 3-0 U.S. win over Belgium, “scor[ed] five brilliant goals” and assisted on O’Brien’s finish “before about 1,000 people, who braved a drenching rain through 90 minutes of play.” (The Boston Globe)

“Referee Haslam decided to call the game, with 25 minutes remaining to play in the second half. Just why he made his decision only he knew, for the playing field was no worse than it was previous to the scoring of the tying goal by the Bird & Son team.”

Dec. 13, 1937 – New York Americans 3:4 Philadelphia Passon, ASL Metropolitan Division game, Starlight Park (Att.: 3,500)

Hat trick for Philadelphia Passon’s Bert Patenaude, who “assumed the goal-scoring leadership.” Patenaude led the ASL in scoring with 24 goals in 1938-39.

Dec. 13, 1914 – Winter Sports At Dartmouth

“Interest in soccer does not tend to diminish at Hanover, despite the approaching Winter … Daily workouts still continue under the supervision of Prof Ralph Hicks, who was captain several years ago at Emmanuel College, Cambridge … One of the most ardent followers of the sport is a Greek named Stamatiades, who came over from Cos, Aegean Sea, three years ago.” (The Boston Globe)

Dec. 13, 1930 – Quincy 5:0 (12:4 aggregate) Pawtucket, New England Schoolboy championship (Att.: 2,000)

The high school title game featured one of the year’s biggest crowds, “… gathered round the ropes when the game started saw a really wonderful exhibition from these boys.” The game appears to have been conducted under FIFA rules, with no substitutes utilized. Goals: Brown 3, McGuire, Jepson.
