The Soccer Social Club of Boston and Royal Rooters were early supporters’ groups. The Soccer Social Club became affiliated with the Boston Wonder Workers of the ASL.

Cornell manager Sarmiento, grandson of former [Argentina] president Sarmiento, whose statue stands on Commonwealth Ave. “Sarmiento … estimates that the ‘soccer’ team will bring $20,000 back to Ithaca.”
Dec. 5, 1908 – Boston Rovers 3:0 Picked Team (Brocktons, Hopedale Rovers, Boston Americans), Franklin Park
“Largest crowd of the season.” Rovers presented with the John C. McGee Challenge Cup as champions of the Boston Association Football League, meeting at the “rooms of’ the Boston Rovers” in Jamaica Plain.

New Bedford ASL leaders. Jimmy Cairney scored the winning goal with a “back heeler” that deflected off Caldwell past New Bedford goalkeeper Johnny Reder (who would go on to play first base for the Red Sox in 1932). Lincoln Park was situated off Massachusetts Avenue, at Gerard and Chesterton streets, in Roxbury, according to Alan Foulds’ Boston’s Ballparks and Arenas. The stadium was also home to baseball teams such as the Boston Tigers, Philly Giants and Boston Colored Giants.
