The Whalers’ Jeremiah “Jerry” Best scored five goals and Tommy Florie added a sixth. Best, who led the ASL with 35 goals in 27 games, played for Newcastle United and Leeds United before joining Providence as a 23-year-old in 1924. Best returned to England in 1931, concluding his career with Hull City.
Dec. 6, 1873 – Yale 2:1 Eton College Alumni at Hamilton Park, New Haven, Conn.
Possibly first 11-a-side game conducted using Football Association rules in the U.S. FA rules were established in London in 1863, and adopted by the Scottish FA in 1873. The U.S. was the third country to endorse the rules, following a meeting of collegiate representatives (Harvard was absent) at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York on Oct. 19, 1873. The match was the first between a British team and a foreign team.
