Bill Fryer, an ex-Barnsley player, captained Paterson’s U.S. Open Cup champions and was playing for the New York National Giants. No figures were reported in the Boston Globe story. A Wikipedia entry lists a $1,500 transfer fee.
Feb. 26, 1928 – Fall River Marksmen 1:2 J&P Coats, National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) Eastern semifinal at Kinsley Park (Att.: 6,000)
Goals: Brittan; McConnell, Adam.
Brittan scored off a Johnny Harvey lob, after Findlay Kerr left the net in the opening minute. McConnell headed past Harper to equalize in the 15th minute. Kerr saved a Tec White penalty kick late in the first half. Arnie Oliver then set up Adam for the deciding goal on a second-half counter. “… at the conclusion, Findlay Kerr and several other players of the winning team were carried shoulder high off the field by the exultant followers of the Threadmen.”

Feb. 26, 1950 – Brookhattan Galicia 2:4 Ponta Delgada, USSFA Eastern (U.S. Open Cup) semifinals
Brookhattan Galacia opened the scoring as Pito Villanon finished after a Joe Gaetjens-F. Lorente combination. John Souza equalized, John Travis (Moniz assist). Gaetjens (from Villanon and Lorente ) scored in the 26th minute. Midway through the second half, Souza was kicked in the knee by Alfredo Alcalde, “which led to trouble as spectators swarmed the field,” leading to a 10-minute delay as “police clear the field, and both players were replaced …” Aldo Gianotti gave Ponta Delgada a 3-2 lead off a Moniz header. John Millington (Gianotti feed) scored the fourth goal. Ponta Delgada defeated the Philadelphia Nationals in the Eastern finals on the way to winning the 1950 U.S. Open Cup title.
