A few months after playing for the U.S. in the 1930 World Cup, Billy Gonsalves and Bert Patenaude teamed up with Fall River against national team captain Tommy Florie of the New Bedford Whalers.
“Patenaude, usually an accurate kicker, threw away an easy opportunity in front of the goal with less than two minutes to play. He evaded the defense, drew the goalie from the cage and then booted wild.” (The Boston Globe)
Goals: Gonsalves; Florie.

Jan. 11, 1930 – Bethlehem Steel 1:1 Fall River Marksmen
Archie Stark opened the scoring. Fall River’s Billy Gonsalves equalized in the 87th minute, then Marksmen goalkeeper Johnny Reder, a future Boston Red Sox first baseman, preserved the deadlock by deflecting a Stark shot off the bar.
“A speedy shot coming off the boot of Archie Stark, the ball grazing the fingers of the outstretched reach of the tall and rangy Reder, the visitors’ custodian, and slightly deflected upwards in its course to crash against the crossbar and drop to the feet of the goalie from where it was cleared, was the scant margin by which the Bethlehem soccer team was denied victory in the torrid scrap against Fall River on Saturday afternoon.” (Bethlehem Globes-Times)
