Harold Brittan and Tec White led the way for the Fall River Marksmen in a National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) first-round match. “… Brittan, ex-Chelsea star and captain of Fall River, smashed in a goal which proved the winning tally.” About 4,000 Providence supporters were expected to make the trip to Mark’s Stadium in North Tiverton, R.I. Goals: White 2, Brittan; Beattie, Hogg.

Jan. 17, 1925 – Clan Robertson 4:3 All-Stars / 110th Cavalry 1:5 Victoria A (Bay State Jr. League), Commonwealth Avenue Armory

Full field, 11 v 11 indoor games were played at the Massachusetts National Guard Armory during the winter months from 1922-25. Doubleheaders were often scheduled on Saturday nights.

Jan. 17, 1931 – New Bedford Whalers 0:4 Fall River Marksmen, National Challenge Cup round robin series

Bert Patenaude  four goals. Marksmen (4W-0L-2D) won the round robin series on the way to capturing the U.S. Open Cup title. Patenaude totaled 19 goals in 11 games as the Marksmen compiled a record of 8W-0L-3D in the competition. Patenaude was third in scoring with 22 goals in 23 games, splitting time with Newark and the Marksmen during the 1930 ASL Fall season.

Jan. 17, 2003 – Revolution select Pat Noonan with No. 9 pick in MLS SuperDraft, acquire Matt Reis from LA Galaxy in exchange for Alex Pineda Chacon

The Revolution also selected Dimelon Westfield and Boston College goalkeeper Kyle Singer in the third round. Draftees included Jamaican national teamers Damani Ralph (Chicago Fire) and Shavar Thomas (Dallas Burn), who were UConn teammates, and Alex Blake (Colorado Rapids), Williams College’s all-time leading scorer with 81 goals; Roger Levesque (San Jose Earthquakes), Falmouth, Maine, via Stanford; and BC’s Casey Schmidt (Colorado). Blake and Thomas also competed at The Hotchkiss School.
