The New England Tea Men played at Schaefer Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., from 1978-80. Former Ireland international and Manchester United defender Noel Cantwell named coach.

The initial MLS Cup was scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 1996. The day before the match, officials considered a postponement due to a torrential downpour that continued throughout the match. D.C. United edged the LA Galaxy, 3-2, on Eddie Pope’s extra time golden goal before a crowd of 34,643.
