Jan. 2, 1892 – Rovers 2:4 East Ends, American Cup tie, Fall River Rovers Grounds (Att.: 2,000)

Post by

The Fall River East Ends rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit and would go on to win their second successive American Cup.

“The Rovers have protested the game … In the early part of the day the weather was all that could be expected, and was almost an ideal foot ball day, but towards noon it became cloudy, and at 2 o’clock the rain fell in torrents, and continued without abating the slightest until evening. Despite the drenching rain nearly 2,000 people assembled on the Rovers’ grounds to witness the exhibition. The Rovers’ management wanted the game postponed, as the ground was by this time in terrible condition and the rain falling heavily. … In the second half … The ground was now churned into a vast mud puddle, and it was with difficulty that the players kept upon their feet. … two of (the Rovers’) best forwards, J. Harrington and Gaven, were taken with chills in the middle of the second half, and were obliged to leave the field. … there was great rejoicing in the Flint village … and the East End admirers are happy as they have unburdened the Rovers’ backers of considerable wealth. The betting was slightly favoring the East Ends …” (The Boston Globe)
