“… the soldiers at Fort Andrews have adopted [soccer] as their Winter pastime. There are two elevens playing at the fort. Sgt. Thomas Gavigan is the man who has aroused the men who wear Uncle Sam’s uniform … to interest in the game.” Fort Andrews, on Peddocks Island in Boston Harbor, also had teams in baseball, basketball and football, and participated in tug of war competitions.
Jan. 21, 1934 – “Special committee” reported the Hampden International League of Springfield, Mass., had submitted a 20-player list of candidates for the World Cup team to the U.S. Soccer Association. Boston area players will be asked “if they are able to leave this country for at least 10 weeks,” according to Boston & District League director P.A.L. Foulds.
