Providence’s Tommy Florie captained the U.S. team, which finished in third place in the inaugural World Cup. James Brown, who would go on to play for Manchester United, and later established the Brunswick School (Greenwich, Conn.) soccer program in the 1950s, scored in the 89th minute. Attendance was reported between 50,000 and 100,000.

July 26, 1916 – U.S. national team boards Frederick VIII to depart from New York for Sweden. “The reserve players are … the redoubtable Tommy Swords of the Fall River Rovers of Fall River, Mass., who will be Massachusetts’ sole representative and who will play forward or any other position that it is necessary for him to get into. All but two of the players of the team representing the United States are native born. The other men are from bonnie Scotland, but are citizens of this country.” (The Boston Globe)

  • Jorge Gonzalez red-carded Ronaldinho, before switching to a caution (32);
  • Milan took a 6-4 win over Inter at Yankee Stadium in 1969;
  • Inter kicked off Triplete season that would conclude with a 2-0 victory (both goals by Milito) over Bayern Munich in Champions League final.
