July 26, 2009 – Inter 2:0 Milan at Gillette Stadium (Att.: 42,531), city rivals in rare meeting outside Milan
Post by frankdellapa@gmail.com
Diego Milito outmaneuvered Oguchi Onyewu in the fourth minute and finished a Dejan Stankovic square ball in the 75th minute before a record crowd for a friendly match involving club teams in the Boston area.
Both teams were in the early stages of preseason, and Milan coach Leonardo complained of fatigued caused by excessive games and travel. Milan got off to a slow start. Onyewu, the first U.S. player to sign with an elite Serie A club since the 1930s, struggled in his starting debut for the Diavoli Rossi. Ronaldinho absorbed a hard foul from Inter’s Esteban Cambiasso in the opening seconds, both teams halting play to ascertain his condition. Then, in the 32nd minute, referee Jorge Gonzalez red-carded Ronaldinho, before switching to a caution.
This was the second meeting of the clubs outside Europe (Milan took a 6-4 win over Inter at Yankee Stadium in 1969), Inter kicking off its Triplete season that would conclude with a 2-0 victory (both goals by Milito) over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final. Chris Aduama photos
