Ponta Delgada, defending National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) and U.S. Amateur Cup champion, sustained its first home loss in four seasons. Haiti’s Joe Gaetjens, who would go on to star for the U.S. national team, led the way, the Boston Globe misspelling his first name: “Center forward Jose Gaetjens scored both Brookhattan goals.”
This two-game series provided a rematch of sorts for several U.S. and Cuba national team players, the second leg scheduled at New York’s Sterling Oval June 20, 1948: “Several of the Brookhattan players were on that Cuban team and their capabilities are well known. Hundreds of fans from the Fall River and Tiverton, Pawtucket and Providence districts will be present to give their favorites vocal support, for they will need it.” (Boston Globe)
Goals: Ed Souza (PK); Gaetjens (2). Note: Ed Souza chance for late-first half tying goal but Phil Newman saved PK
