The Revolution became the first MLS team to lose to an amateur team in Foxborough’s inaugural U.S. Open Cup match. The Revolution fell to the Long Island Roughriders, 4-3, in extra time, in their U.S. Open Cup debut in 1997, then skipped the competition for two years. The Revolution gambled by opening Foxboro Stadium, drawing a “lively but all-time low” attendance (until a 947 crowd arrived for a 7-1 win in a rematch with the Bucks in 2001).
Revolution midfielder Shaker Asad had a seventh-minute penalty kick saved by Eric Pogue. Kenyan Bonaventure Maruti, who played at Southern Connecticut State, helped set up Chad Schomaker’s 90th-minute goal. Revolution owner Robert Kraft went on the field to congratulate the Bucks, who went on to lose to the Miami Fusion on penalty kicks in the next round.
