Scotland had an 8W-1L-0D record, losing, 2-0, to Belfast Celtic at Triborough Stadium on Randall’s Island in New York on May 29, 1949, on a North American tour. Rangers’ Willie Thornton scored twice, Derby County’s Willie Steel once. Thornton converted off a 19th-minute McKenzie corner, then Frank “Shorty” Moniz equalized off a John Souza feed. Steel broke the deadlock, Scotland taking a two-goal halftime lead. Goalkeeper Wally Romanowicz kept the New England team in contention. “Only Wally’s great work kept the Scots from tallying several more goals.” (The Boston Globe). Manuel Martin, Moniz and Souza played for the U.S. in a 4-0 loss to the Scots at Triborough Stadium on Randall’s Island on June 19, 1949.
