Post by

The U.S. upset England, the only time the U.S. national team won a World Cup finals match between 1930 and 1994, on Joe Gaetjens’ 38th-minute goal. The U.S. team included Fall River’s Frank “Shorty” Moniz, 38, plus Ed Souza, 28, and John “Clarkie” Souza, 29.

The U.S. squandered a 1-0 halftime lead in falling, 3-1, to Spain in the 1950 World Cup opener in Curitiba on June 25. Ed Souza was not included in the U.S. lineup in qualifiers or in the World Cup opener, but played in the England match and a 5-2 loss to Chile in Recife on July 2, 1950.
