Nigeria gained first place in Group D of the 1994 World Cup on Daniel Amokachi’s late goal. That meant Nigeria would be top seeded from the group and remain at Foxboro Stadium to face Italy in a second-round match July 5, 1994.
“Amokachi’s goal, in the 49th minute of the second half, sailed into the net just as former President Bush, Gov. Weld and the rest of the crowd of 53,001 began leaving and just seconds before Scottish referee Leslie Mottram whistled the end of the match.”

Pelé scored three goals “before departing in a police car at the 24-minute mark” of the second half. Fog, high ticket prices ($10) and a “false radio report that the game had been canceled” likely limited the crowd.Santos midfielder Afonsinho, who provided a halftime “exhibition,” became a medical doctor and continues to practice medicine for INSS (Brazilian Social Security) in Rio de Janeiro. Afonsinho “owns his own contract and sued for right to wear beard and long hair on field …” (M.R. Montgomery/The Boston Globe)
