June 7, 1992 – Ireland 2:0 Portugal, U.S. Cup match at Foxboro Stadium (Att.: 41,227)

Post by

Steve Staunton’s 39th-minute “Olimpico” opened the scoring in Ireland’s only win in six games (1W-2L-3D) in Foxborough.

“It was very difficult after a long, hard season, and especially with the weather,” Ireland coach Jack Charlton said. “When you win games you enjoy the trip and if you don’t win games you don’t enjoy the trip. We’ve enjoyed it very much. But we won’t do it again.”

The average age of Carlos Queiroz’ Portugal team was 23, including 20-year-old Luis Figo. The narrow field contributed to Staunton’s score past Vitor Baia.

My Boston Globe story also noted: “ … a crowd of 41,227 at Foxboro Stadium likely clinched a fifth match for the Boston/Foxborough venue in the 1994 World Cup finals.”

The match was played on a Sunday afternoon at the same time as a Red Sox v. Cleveland Indians game, which drew a crowd of 33,202.
