Taylor Twellman converted a left-footer after a 50-yard run and layoff by Khano Smith as the New England Revolution went to 0 for 3 in MLS Cup finals.
“The ball was in our court, we had seven minutes to defend and we lost track for 12 seconds and gave up a goal,” Twellman said. “We have lost in every possible way in the final. Hopefully, we will have one more try, because it can’t happen any other way. It’s tough right now and this is going to sting for a while. I hope we can come back but you never know.”
On Nov. 11, 2006, MLS instituted “The Beckham Rule,” opening the way for designated players to be paid outside the salary cap. The Revolution advanced to the 2007 and ’14 MLS Cups, losing both.
