A girls interscholastic soccer league was expected to begin in November, 1913. The Boston Globe subhed: “More than 200 From Brockton High School Play Behind Locked and Guarded Gates”

“A flock of small boys watched the practice from neighboring hilltops and from the fences. Two big policemen guarded the gates and made it possible for the young women to practice without intrusion.”

Nov. 4, 1928 – Providence 2:1 Fall River, Fall River’s first loss of season

The Marksmen started the season with a 16-match (10-0-6) unbeaten streak on the way to winning both halves of the ASL season. Fall River did not lose again until late December, playing to a 0-0 draw at Philadelphia on Nov. 10, 1928, then winning four successive times. In the second half standings, Fall River (28 points) finished 1 point ahead of Providence after the teams played to a 2-2 draw on April 21, 1929. Fall River opened the scoring, Cyril Hunter (30) converting. Providence rallied in the second half, Patterson equalizing on Fitzpatrick’s 49th-minute cross and Green converting a penalty kick after Jimmy Kelly was called for handling by referee George Lambie. Fall River’s Bert Patenaude, who turned 19 on this date, joined the Marksmen late in the season and totaled 10 goals in 19 appearances. Lambie refereed at least three National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) finals and also directed the Scottish Clans League in the 1920s. Goals: Patterson, Green (PK); Hunter.
