Philadelphia FC, essentially the Bethlehem Steel team that won four of the first six U.S. Open Cup titles (1915, ’16, ’18, ’19), got off to a strong start on the way to winning the ASL’s first championship. Dugald “Dougie” Campbell scored all the goals in the opener. Philadelphia’s Harold Brittan won the scoring title with 24 goals and teammate Tommy “Whitey” Fleming added 15 goals.
Fall River United 2:3 Holyoke Falcos
The Fall River lineup included Frank Booth, who played for the Fall River Rovers’ 1917 U.S. Open Cup winners and was father of Russell Booth, a two-sport (basketball, soccer) star who went on to become the 1948 Small College scoring champion (23.6 points per game) for Durfee Tech (now UMass-Dartmouth) and then coached the Diman Regional Vocational soccer team for 20-plus years. (The Boston Globe story headline is incorrect).
