“Patenaude, center forward for the Fall River reserves, smashed all records for individual scoring in organized soccer in this city … when he netted six goals in the Massachusetts State League match … Five of the markers came in a row.” (The Boston Globe)

Bert Patenaude was 18 years old when he was playing for the Fall River Reserves. Less than two years later, Patenaude converted the first World Cup hat trick for the U.S. national team in Uruguay.

James Brown, 21, headed to Manchester United in 1932, scored for the U.S. Carvalho Leite, who played in the 1930 World Cup and had scored for Brazil in a 4-3 win over the U.S. on April 17, 1930, converted one of Botafogo’s goals. Brown, Mike Bookie, Arnie Oliver, Bert Patenaude were playing their final game for the U.S. national team. In a 1990 interview, Arnie Oliver (New Bedford, Mass.) recalled having scored the deciding goal in a U.S. 4-3 victory over Santos FC, only for next day newspaper accounts to report the score as a draw.
