Bert Patenaude hat trick for New York Giants, Jim Brown scored for Newark Americans in a National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) match. Patenaude, born in Fall River in 1909, was 20 years old when he led the U.S. in scoring in the 1930 World Cup (first hat trick in the competition) and Brown was 21 (he scored in the semifinals). Bertrand Arthur Patenaude (b. Nov. 4, 1909 in Fall River, Mass.) scored in the 10th, 15th and 50th minutes as the U.S. produced its second successive 3-0 result, advancing to the semifinals of the inaugural World Cup. Patenaude, 20, was the youngest player on the U.S. roster, and ended up third in scoring with four goals in the World Cup. Jamaica national team forward Lloyd McLean’s 25th-minute goal opened the scoring, Pelé and Santos FC then dominating for a 7-1 victory over the Boston Beacons at Fenway Park. Toninho scored twice for Santos, equalizing in the 33rd minute, Pelé converting the go-ahead goal.
