Wolde Harris’ 50th-minute goal deflected off current New England Revolution assistant coach Tom Soehn to give the Revolution their first MLS playoff advantage. The Revolution had advanced to the playoffs only once in the first four seasons of MLS, and it took until this series for them to win their first playoff match. May 13, 2000 – Free kick hat trick, Revolution defeat D.C. Utd.; new striker on way?
The Revolution earned three free kicks, three different players converting all three in a 3-1 victory over D.C. United. Wolde Harris (15th minute) equalized, a minute after a Jaime Moreno goal, then Mauricio Ramos (65th) and Imad Baba (82nd) scored and Jeff Causey saved a Moreno penalty kick in the second half. The Revolution improved their unbeaten streak to five games, their longest streak in five years of existence, and were on the way to their first .500 season. Coach Fernando Clavijo inserted Mike Burns into a holding midfield role in the second half, and the tactic worked as Burns slowed Moreno. Feb. 2, 1997 – Revolution select Scott Coufal in 2nd round of MLS draft
The plan was for Scott Coufal to learn the trade from Walter Zenga, but after Zenga sustained a knee injury, Coufal became the Revolution’s starter. The timing was bad, as the Revolution were in a mid-season slump and would sustain a 10-game losing streak, recovering only after Zenga’s return. Coufal started in goal for three games of the streak, then the Revolution brought in Jeff Causey, who would go on to become a regular with the team through 2002, but could do little to prevent the losses from continuing.
Revolution coach Thomas Rongen had gambled with Coufal as Zenga’s backup. An alternative might have been Khalil Azmi, who had been Morocco’s starter in the 1994 World Cup and had remained in the Boston area, acquiring a green card. With Zenga in goal, the Revolution rallied to clinch their first MLS playoff berth. [Read more…] about Feb. 2, 1997 – Revolution select Scott Coufal in 2nd round of MLS draft
Jan. 15, 2002 – Revolution waive Caté, sign Adin Brown
Jan. 15, 2002 – Revolution waive Caté, sign goalkeeper Adin Brown
The Revolution cleared roster and salary cap space to make room for Brown, who would play a key part in the team’s run to the MLS Cup final. Brown was expected to take on a backup role in place of Jeff Causey, who had been among the Revolution’s steadiest performers during unsteady times.
Brown ended up as a starter, playing 61 games in all competitions, his final appearance in a 2-1 win over the New York/New Jersey MetroStars June 26, 2004. Brown sustained an injury in the first half, and was replaced by Matt Reis, never to appear again for the Revolution, moving to Aalesund in Norway.
