The Chicago Fire eliminated the Revolution from both the 2009 MLS playoffs (for the second successive season) and SuperLiga. The Revolution’s rivalry with the Fire began cooling down as both teams declined. Since 2009, the teams have met once in an elimination situation, the Revolution taking a 2-1 victory over the Fire in a 2016 U.S. Open Cup match.

On July 4, 1988, FIFA awarded the 1994 World Cup to the U.S. “It will give us the opportunity to develop a major national professional league system,” USSF president Werner Fricker noted. Six years later, the final was staged at the Rose Bowl, and two years after that, the Revolution upset the Galaxy before a crowd of 62,703. Former University of Vermont star Jim St. Andre had a spectacular performance in goal as the Revolution won on Independence Day. John Kerr’s sliding finish just ahead of former Williams College defender Dan Calichman made the difference, and the Revolution held off the Galaxy after Alexi Lalas’ 80th-minute red card, following an altercation with a ball boy.

Adin Brown (concussion) was replaced by Matt Reis after halftime as the Revolution rallied. Brown then went to Aalesund FK in Norway on a free transfer in 2005. The Revolution became the first MLS team to lose to an amateur team in Foxborough’s inaugural U.S. Open Cup match. The Revolution fell to the Long Island Roughriders, 4-3, in extra time, in their U.S. Open Cup debut in 1997, then skipped the competition for two years. SL Benfica attracted the largest soccer crowd of the day, greater than World Cup matches in France (Chile v Italy in Bordeaux, Austria v Cameroon in Toulouse). Carlos Rocha opened the scoring, then Bolivian Erwin “Platini” Sanchez converted free kicks in the 76th and 87th minutes for Benfica. This was Benfica’s first Foxborough appearance since 1972.
