Former Manchester City center forward William “Billy” Gillespie (b. Oct. 2, 1873 in Strathclyde, Scotland) scored for Lynn City. Gillespie, described as “one of the greatest center forwards England has had in years,” had combined with Billy Meredith, winning the 1904 FA Cup with the Citizens. Manchester City was later disciplined for paying players above the maximum wage; Gillespie refused to pay a fine, instead moving to the U.S., settling in Lynn and later coaching Harvard’s soccer team. Boston Soccer Club won the equivalent of a national championship, defeating St. Louis champion Ben Millers, 3-2. Johnny Ballantyne, Barney Battles and Tommy “Whitey” Fleming scored for Boston, Jimmy Dunn and Pee Wee Fitzgerald for the Ben Millers.
The Boston Globe story noted: “The day was too hot for good soccer.” The Millers’ Tommy White suffered a fractured leg in the first seven minutes of play (in the second half) in a collision with W. This was considered a major upset, since Boston had contracted several top British star players to play in the American Soccer League. Feb. 11, 2011 – Revolution acquire SS Lazio midfielder Ousmane Dabo
Not many players in Revolution history displayed greater composure in midfield than Ousmane Dabo, though not enough people had a chance to see him demonstrate his ability in New England. When Dabo was 21, he was transferred from Rennes to Inter for 9 million euros. A 31-year-old Roberto Baggio (2.5m euros) and a 19-year-old Andrea Pirlo (2m euros) were among Inter’s midfield newcomers that year. Dabo became a valuable journeyman holding midfielder, learning the trade with several Serie A clubs, winning Coppa Italia twice, plus the 2003 Confederations Cup with France. Dabo also made a stop at Manchester City, where he played under Stuart Pearce and also absorbed a major cheap shot from teammate Joey Barton during a training session.
