Matt Reis
Dec. 11, 2013 – Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis announces retirement
When Matt Reis joined MLS in 1998, there were few openings for starting goalkeepers. And, after four seasons playing mostly as a backup to Kevin Hartman with the Los Angeles Galaxy, Reis set up a deal that took him to the Revolution, one of the teams Reis reasoned would give him a chance to start. Reis turned out to be right, as an Adin Brown injury led to Reis becoming the Revolution’s first-choice ‘keeper for the next 10 years. May 2, 2006 – Clint Dempsey named to U.S. World Cup team
Clint Dempsey went on to score a goal for the USMNT in the 2006 World Cup and went on to captain the team and total 56 goals in 132 international appearances.
Dempsey, who was playing his third season with the Revolution, continued a streak of New England-based players on U.S. World Cup teams extending to 1998 (Alexi Lalas, Joe-Max Moore) and 2002 (Carlos Llamosa). Four Revolution players were named to a reserve list: Pat Noonan; Steve Ralston, who had converted the goal to clinch a U.S. place in the World Cup finals; goalkeeper Matt Reis; and Taylor Twellman. TODAY IN NEW ENGLAND SOCCER HISTORY
March 25, 2007 – Revolution 3:1 Olimpia, Tad Gormley Stadium, New Orleans
New Orleans was still recovering, less than two years post-Hurricane Katrina, and this preseason game between the Revolution and CD Olimpia turned out to be unique among the sporting events related to the city’s rebuilding. Adam Cristman scored two goals, Andy Dorman one, for the Revolution (Argentinian Jose Pacini converted for Olimpia) before a predominantly Honduran 8,947 crowd that included Mayor Ray Nagin. Brad Knighton’s performance in goal also helped establish his status as a high-level backup.
The Revolution’s visit involved several New England connections. The trip was set up by New Orleans Shellshockers coach Kenny Farrell, a former Salem State star. The Revolution had conducted preseason training in New Orleans in 2004, and the venture had concluded with Carlos Llamosa’s season-ending knee injury on the turf at Tulane University in a game that included a 10th-minute ejection of Jose Cancela. After that experience, the Revolution were inclined to avoid New Orleans, but Farrell persuaded Steve Nicol to return, partly because Farrell pitched him on involving the Revolution in the city’s rehabilitation. Nicol was also convinced by the refurbishing of the soccer field at Tad Gormley Stadium, via a donation from the New Orleans’ Saints’ Reggie Bush (in ’04, most of the fields the Revolution trained on were poor quality). Jan. 22, 2010 – Revolution acquire Burpo and Gibbs, lose Larentowicz
Jan. 22, 2010 – Revolution acquire Preston Burpo and Cory Gibbs from Colorado in exchange for Jeff Larentowicz and Wells Thompson
This deal was set up after Larentowicz decided to play out his contract. And it did not work out well for the Revolution. Larentowicz had proven to be a fundamental piece of the Revolution midfield, and one of the last remaining connections to the successful teams of the recent past. But the Revolution were unwilling to meet his price. At the time, we calculated that Larentowicz would have needed to stay nine years with the Revolution to earn what he was going to make in four years by leaving. Jan. 17, 2003 – Revolution select Pat Noonan with No. 9 pick in SuperDraft
Jan. 17, 2003 – Revs select Pat Noonan with No. 9 pick in MLS SuperDraft, acquire Matt Reis from LA Galaxy in exchange for Alex Pineda Chacon
Noonan went on to score 46 goals in all competitions in four years with the Revolution, second on the team’s all-time list at time, before departing for Aalesund in Norway.
This draft marked former Revolution coach Steve Nicol’s ability to find underrated collegiate prospects late in the first round. In 2004, Nicol took Clint Dempsey at No. 8 and in 2005, Michael Parkhurst No. 9. [Read more…] about Jan. 17, 2003 – Revolution select Pat Noonan with No. 9 pick in SuperDraft
Jan. 15, 2002 – Revolution waive Caté, sign Adin Brown
Jan. 15, 2002 – Revolution waive Caté, sign goalkeeper Adin Brown
The Revolution cleared roster and salary cap space to make room for Brown, who would play a key part in the team’s run to the MLS Cup final. Brown was expected to take on a backup role in place of Jeff Causey, who had been among the Revolution’s steadiest performers during unsteady times.
Brown ended up as a starter, playing 61 games in all competitions, his final appearance in a 2-1 win over the New York/New Jersey MetroStars June 26, 2004. Brown sustained an injury in the first half, and was replaced by Matt Reis, never to appear again for the Revolution, moving to Aalesund in Norway.
