Brian McBride (22’ & 28’) and Chris Henderson (49’) gave the U.S. a 3-0 lead over El Salvador on the final day of World Cup qualifying. Nildeson de Melo cut the deficit and Raul Diaz Arce (who would score 18 goals for the Revolution in the 1998 MLS season) converted a 62nd-minute penalty kick past future Revolution goalkeeper Jurgen Sommer (who replaced current Revolution coach Brad Friedel after halftime). De Melo earned the penalty after a clash with Peter Vermes. Nov. 15, 2010 – Revolution sign Diego Fagundez to Homegrown contract

Diego Fagundez (b. Feb. 14, 1995 in Montevideo) was a 15-year-old Leominster High School student when he signed with the New England Revolution. Fagundez scored two goals in six games during the 2011 season and became the team’s leading scorer with 13 goals in 31 games in 2013. Nov. 12, 2004 – Clint Dempsey named MLS Rookie of the Year

Several teams had a chance to select Clint Dempsey in the MLS draft before Revolution coach Steve Nicol made the call with the eighth pick. Dempsey had trained with Dallas, considered his hometown team, but apparently had not impressed. Nicol credited former Revolution coach Thomas Rongen, who had guided Dempsey on the U.S. U-20 team, with the recommendation. Mike Burns grew up in Marlborough and joined Alexi Lalas as the New England Revolution’s first assigned players when MLS began in 1996. Burns played right back for the U.S. national team (1992-98) and the Revolution (1996-2000), San Jose Earthquakes (2000) and Kansas City Wizards (2001-02). Estacio (Stacy) DeCastro set a collegiate record in a game against Unity and totaled 62 goals in the 1973 season and 166 career goals for the Eagles. Husson reached the NAIA New England final (2-0 loss to Eastern Connecticut State) in 1973 and compiled a 53W-8L-1D record in DeCastro’s four seasons.

Steve Nicol guided the Revolution to four MLS Cup finals, the 2007 U.S. Open Cup title and 2008 SuperLiga championship in 10 years as head coach. Nicol had a remarkable run with the team, though he never sought to be hired as head coach by the Revolution, even turning down their offer in 1999. Foxboro Stadium was named to play host to the initial MLS Cup final on Jan. 19, 1996, kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20.
