Revolution history repeated itself as the team scored in the fourth minute in taking a 1-0 victory in the MLS Eastern Conference final. Clint Dempsey’s goal made the difference as the Revolution took a 1-0 decision over the Chicago Fire at Gillette Stadium in the 2005 final and Taylor Twellman’s fourth-minute score gave the Revolution the win at RFK Stadium in ’06. The Revolution captured the conference title for the third time in five successive appearances, avenging a 2004 penalty kick defeat to D.C. United.

Nov. 3, 2010 – Taylor Twellman announces retirement
Twellman sustained seven concussions, the decisive one during the Revolution’s 2-2 draw with the Galaxy on Aug. 30, 2008. Twellman, who totaled 101 goals in 174 regular-season games and 119 goals in 211 matches in all competitions for the Revolution, announced his retirement at a Gillette Stadium press conference attended by his family and former teammates, plus Revolution owners Jonathan and Robert Kraft. Twellman founded the ThinkTaylor foundation, a concussion awareness charitable organization.

New Bedford FC took an upset victory in the debut of the National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup) as this was “the visitors’ … second reverse in three years.” Farr Alpaca (Holyoke, Mass.) opened the scoring on a Burnett penalty kick. “Becton equalized almost immediately” and “Mellor increased the score to three by notching two fine tallies …” The Boston Globe termed the tournament the “U.S. Challenge Cup.”
