U.S. team selected for 1934 World Cup includes Eddie Czerkiewicz, Walter Dick, Tommy Florie, Joe Martinelli (Pawtucket Rangers); Billy Gonsalves, “Scotty” Nilsen (Stix, Baer & Fuller); T. Lynch (Brooklyn Celtics); A. Donelli (Curry FC, Pittsburgh). Also named were Willie McLean and B. Lehman (Stix, Baer & Fuller); George Moorhouse (New York Americans); goalkeeper J. Hjulian (Chicago Wieboldts); and F.J. “Hun” Ryan, W. Fielder and P. Pietras (Philadelphia German-Americans). Reserves were A. Harker and H. Rapp (German-Americans) and T. Amrhein (Baltimore Cantons).

Bert Patenaude (b. Nov. 4, 1909) scored 13 goals, Billy Gonsalves (b. Aug. 10, 1908) added 9 in the Fall River Marksmen Cup campaign. Patenaude and Gonsalves, who had teamed to help the U.S. to the semifinals of the 1930 World Cup, grew up in Fall River, Mass., and could have been expected to lead the U.S. national for years to come. April 3, 1932 – New Bedford Whalers win National Challenge Cup (U.S. Open Cup)

The New Bedford Whalers were led by Billy Gonsalves, Alex McNab, Bill McPherson and Werner “Scotty” Nilsen. Those four players had combined to win the 1930 and ’31 U.S. Open Cup when the team was based in Fall River, and would go on to win the U.S. Open Cup with Stix, Baer & Fuller in 1933 and 1934. Edmund Smith opened the scoring in the second half as Shawsheen Indians continued their path to the 1925 U.S. Open Cup championship. Smith played for Arboath FC in Scotland, then joined Shawsheen and Bethlehem Steel, earning a cap for the U.S. national team in 1926. Smith resided in Andover, Mass., for most of his life. This Fall River-Bethlehem Steel U.S. Open Cup match at the Polo Grounds “was one of the greatest games ever seen here,” according to the Boston Globe report. Attendance announced at 15,000, including 3,000 arriving from New England (the New York Giants averaged less than 12,000 attendance in both the 1929 and ’30 National League baseball seasons at the Polo Grounds).

George Burford and George M. Collins were in charge of the U.S. team that defeated Estonia (1-0), then was eliminated by eventual gold medalists Uruguay (3-0). Collins was also the soccer editor of The Boston Globe (nice gig!).
